Mark E. Russell is vice president of Engineering, Technology and Mission Assurance for Raytheon Company. He assumed the position in July 2008, and was elected a company officer in June 2008. Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN), with 2019 sales of $29 billion and 70,000 employees, is a technology and innovation leader specializing in defense, civil government and cybersecurity solutions. Raytheon is headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts.
Russell guides the company’s vision and provides corporate leadership in the strategic areas of technology and research, engineering, operations, performance excellence, programs security, Raytheon Six SigmaTM, and Mission Assurance. He is responsible for 45,000 world-class people working on more than 8,000 programs.
Prior to leading Raytheon’s engineering organization, Russell was vice president of Engineering for Raytheon’s Integrated Defense Systems (IDS) business. In this role, he was responsible for leading IDS’ engineering activities, including the capture and management of technology and advanced programs; coordination of strategic architecture initiatives; development and production of advanced semiconductor products; continuous improvement of processes and tools; and product development.

field testing, and project and program management for state-of-the-art radar, missile and communication systems including Patriot, Home Land Defense Area 1 (HLDA1), Wide Band Gap Semiconductor, Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor (JLENS), Sea-Based X-Band Radar (SBX), Cobra Judy Replacement, Upgraded Early Warning Radar and the DDG 1000 destroyer. He
has managed production facilities, including the Advanced Products Center and Raytheon RF Components. He has also served as director of surface radar engineering, and the Radar Design and Electronics Center for Raytheon’s Electronic Systems business, and he has expertise in the development of microwave systems and components.
Russell has published 16 peer-reviewed papers on active electronically steered arrays and radar systems, missiles, photonic technology, solid-state transmitters and communications systems. He holds 36 patents in the areas of microwave and millimeter-wave components, high-range resolution radar applications and missile seekers.
In 2016 Russell was appointed board member to the Defense Science Board, which provides independent advice and recommendations on matters relating to the Department
of Defense’s scientific and technical enterprise. In 2012 he was named an AIAA Fellow by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and an IEEE Fellow by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
Outside of Raytheon, Russell serves on the Board of Trustees for Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the Joslin Diabetes Center, and he is past chairman of the board of directors for the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering.
Russell earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Subsequently, while working at Raytheon, Russell earned his master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst under the Raytheon Advanced Study scholarship program. Both universities have honored Russell for his career accomplishments with distinguished alumni recognition. In May 2012, Russell was awarded an honorary doctorate in engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Russell has completed several Raytheon management programs, including the Executive Leadership Summit and Business Leadership Program, and is a qualified Raytheon Six Sigma Specialist.

Julie Mitchell is a Solutions Design and Innovation manager at Amazon Robotics, focused on robotic solutions for Amazon’s Customer Fulfillment and Transportation business units. Julie’s team is responsible for designing next generation fulfillment and transportation solutions that meets the business requirements and customer needs in North America, Europe, Asia and other emerging regions. Julie’s team collaborates with several Amazon worldwide engineering design teams to integrate Amazon Robotics solutions into the overall building design and network topology. Prior to joining Amazon Robotics, Julie was the Product Line Manager for Oracle’s Systems Business Manufacturing and Supply Chain organization. At Oracle, Julie lead a team of manufacturing engineers, test engineers, and Operations program managers to bring new products from concept development to customer release, as well as responsibility for sustaining of several high volume product lines. Julie joined Oracle through the acquisition of Sun Microsystems, where she held roles as a Supplier Engineering manager, Program Manager and Manufacturing/Mechanical Engineer. Julie is a Six Sigma Black belt. She holds an MS in Management from MIT’s Sloan School of Business, an MS in Systems Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an MS in Manufacturing Engineering from Boston University, and a BS in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Cornell University.

With over 20 years of experience in High Performance Computing, Josh currently leads an effort within VMware’s Office of the CTO to bring the full value of virtualization to HPC. Previously, he was a Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems with broad responsibilities for HPC direction and strategy. He joined Sun in 1996 from Thinking Machines Corporation, a pioneering company in the area of Massively Parallel Processors (MPPs), where he held a variety of technical positions. Josh has worked on developer tools for distributed parallel computing, including language and compiler design, scalable parallel debugger design and development, and MPI. He has also worked in the areas of 3D graphics, image processing, and realtime device control. Josh has an undergraduate degree in Engineering from Harvard College and a Masters in Computer Science from Harvard University. He has served as a member of the OpenMP ARB Board of Directors since 2002 and is currently serving as Chairman of the Board.

John Carson is the chairman of the board of Jenike & Johanson, Inc., a world-renowned engineering consulting firm specializing in the storage, flow and processing of powder and bulk solids. For almost 50 years Carson has played a key role in developing Jenike & Johanson to its present position, and my technical ability and wide experience in the field of storage and flow of solids have been recognized worldwide.
Carson received my BS in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston. As an undergraduate student at Northeastern University, Carson worked on co-op in the materials handling research group at US Steel’s Applied Research Laboratory. In 1970 Carson completed his Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), after which Carson joined Jenike & Johanson, where he has been active in research, consulting, and management of the company. Carson retired from full-time employment in 2018.
An author of over 150 articles on various topics dealing with solids flow, including bin and feeder design, flow of fine powders, design of purge vessels, and structural failures of silos, Carson has lectured extensively on these and related topics. For more than 40 years, he was involved with the presentation of the AIChE Continuing Education course, “Flow of Solids in Bins, Hoppers, Chutes, and Feeders.”

Greg Johnson, PE has 37 years of transportation experience ranging from project-level success tactics and oversight to executive-level strategy and technical direction. He has delivered a career of widely ranging projects from multi-million dollar fast-paced freeway reconstructions to quality downtown streetscapes and non-motorized facilities. He has held a variety of positions including resident engineer, TSC manager, region engineer, chief engineer/deputy director, and state highway administrator. At all levels throughout his career, Greg has sought out and implemented innovative solutions to transportation problems. He played a key role in implementing and improving numerous processes including e-construction, dispute resolution boards, alternate project delivery methods, enhanced partnering, electronic invoicing, prompt pay specifications, etc. He also participated in the rewrite of the MDOT 2003 and 2012 Standard Specifications for construction as well as overseeing the conversion to an electronic format. One of Greg’s key areas of expertise is in creating and enhancing successful teams, ensuring that they are well resourced to deliver quality projects and solutions. Greg’s passionate leadership and ability to deliver projects that meet community needs while achieving needed mobility objectives have been recognized by both those external and internal to the organizations he has served.

Major General (Retired) Bill Rapp is leadership and strategy consultant. Beyond leader development training, Bill serves on the Board of the Association of Graduates at West Point. He recently served as the Lecturer in Military Affairs in the Belfer Center at Harvard Kennedy School from 2017-2021 after serving more than 33 years as an active duty Army officer, retiring as a Major General.

His passion is leader development and he teaches leadership to executives in courses at Wharton Business School (UPenn), Sloan School of Management (MIT), through Thayer Leadership, and the General Officer education program of the US Army War College. He consults with several companies on leadership and leader development.
During his career, Major General Rapp served over five years in Germany, a year in Japan, and nearly four years total in Iraq and Afghanistan. He commanded an airborne sapper company in the First Gulf War, an engineer brigade in Iraq in 2005-6, and was Deputy Commander (Support) for US Forces in Afghanistan in 2011-12. During the Surge in Iraq, he served alongside General Petraeus for a year in Baghdad. He was the Army’s senior liaison to the U.S. Congress, the Commandant of the United States Military Academy at West Point, and most recently served as the Commandant of the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
Among his awards, Major General Rapp has earned two Distinguished Service Medals and two Bronze Stars. He was distinguished honor graduate of Ranger School, Jumpmaster School, and the Infantry Officer Advanced Course. He is a Master Parachutist and holds the Combat Action Badge.
A graduate of West Point in 1984, Major General Rapp earned a Masters in Strategic Studies from the US Army War College and a Masters and PhD in Political Science from Stanford University.

Brad Morrison studies problems in organizations, organizational change, and management that are rooted in the interactions of human behavior and the dynamically complex environments in which we work. One stream of his research focuses on implementation problems and other organizational pathologies, trying to understand why some cases lead to successful implementation while others lead to failures. He has studied implementation in contexts such as process improvement settings and firms adopting the practices of lean manufacturing. His research draws strongly on organizational theory, with a methodological emphasis on interpretation through the lens of system dynamics.
Another stream of his research focuses on human performance in dynamically complex settings in healthcare, such as emergency departments and operating rooms. He is currently Principal Investigator for a study supported by the National Institutes of Health to investigate emergency department crowding and organizational resilience. He is also a faculty member and researcher at the Center for Medical Simulation in Boston, where he works with doctors, nurses and other healthcare providers using full-field simulation improve safety in healthcare.
He has been a partner at a leading global management consulting firm and has more than 20 years of consulting experience in the retail and consumer products and healthcare industries. He has assisted dozens of organizations wrestling with change in areas such as product development and supply chain management.
Morrison has taught system dynamics and operations management in a variety of undergraduate, masters, and executive education programs at the MIT Sloan School of Management and at the Brandeis International Business School. His publications have appeared in a range of journals including the Academy of Management Review, the American Medical Journal, Academic Emergency Medicine, the System Dynamics Review, and the Journal of Operations Management. He is the 2012 recipient of the Jay W. Forrester Award from the System Dynamics Society, recognizing the best work in the field for the previous 5 years. The son of Rear Admiral James H. Hogg ’27, USN (Ret.), and his wife Mary Jane, Admiral James R. Hogg ’56, USN (Ret.), never questioned his desire to attend the Naval Academy or spend his life in service to the Navy. That conviction set the foundation for a 57-year career in active duty and civilian service.
Following graduation from the Academy, Admiral Hogg began his career at sea, completing 14 overseas deployments including three in the Vietnam War zone. His five command tours included the guided missile frigate ENGLAND, Destroyer Squadron 31, Destroyer Squadron 7, Cruiser Destroyer Group one/Task Force 75 and the Seventh Fleet, during which he established a more effective system for maintaining the location of Soviet submarines and turned back several Soviet incursions.
His shore service was no less distinguished, beginning with his selection as executive assistant to the Chief of Naval Personnel and continuing with his time as Director of Navy Military Personnel Policy. In this role, Admiral Hogg combatted severe morale and retention challenges by paving the way for significant increases in compensation, housing allowances, bonuses, and other benefits. Later, as Director of Naval Warfare, Admiral Hogg helped ensure the Navy’s continued warfighting capabilities as funding declined with the end of the Cold War. For his efforts and achievements, Admiral Hogg received his fourth star and final active duty assignment as U.S. Representative to the NATo Military Committee, from which he retired in 1991.
After four years as president of the National Security Industrial Association, Admiral Hogg returned to the Navy as a civilian as director of the Chief of Naval operations’ Strategic Studies Group (SSG) in Newport, RI. Admiral Hogg transformed SSG from the study of maritime strategy to the generation of revolutionary, actionable concepts to lead the Navy into the future by capitalizing on innovation and technology. During his 18-year tenure, SSG provided five CNos with key strategies to ensure the Navy’s rapid advances in critical areas including all-electric ships, unmanned systems, and cyber warfare.
Admiral Hogg stepped down from SSG in 2014. Still active, he offers outreach services to the Naval War College through its foundation, conducts leadership workshops at Northeastern University and serves as chairman of the Board of Directors of the Surface Navy Association. The recently dedicated Future Forces Gallery at the Naval War College and the Rail Gun Firing Line Facility at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division both bear his name.
Admiral Hogg has continued to give back to the Academy through his service as a member of the Curriculum 21 Review Committee, an early advisor in cybersecurity studies, New England Alumni Chapter president, Naval Academy Alumni Association Trustee and a Trustee of the Naval Academy Foundation’s Athletic and Scholarship Programs division. He and his wife, Anne, make their home in Portsmouth, RI, and have four grown children.

Adam Wimsatt is a Gordon Fellow with a Masters in Computer Systems Engineering from Northeastern University. Wimsatt is a Senior Manager: Sustaining Engineering at Oliver Wyman. Oliver Wyman is a management consulting firm that provides software solutions and data analysis in many industries including financial, retail, logistics and health care industries.

Gordon Fellow, Aaron returned home to Central New York and joined Strategic as a member of the investment team covering the Energy and Materials sectors.
As a Senior Advisor Aaron partners with clients of all ages to oversee their financial affairs. He develops structured financial plans and investment portfolios to achieve a wide variety of client goals and helps clients discover what their goals might be if they are just getting started. Aaron is also a member of Strategic’s Investment Committee.
Prior to joining Strategic in 2011, Aaron managed and designed defense solutions for the United States Armed Forces with Lockheed Martin Corporation.
