Candidates will complete all 16 semester-hours of required GIEL coursework during one calendar year. Upon completion, Candidates earn a Graduate Certificate in Engineering Leadership and the prestigious title of “Gordon Fellow.”
Fall and Spring Semester (September – April)
- Classes are held on the main Boston campus, flexible hybrid options allow candidates to attend weekly classes both in-person or virtually.
- Tuesdays (4:00pm-8:30pm) and Thursdays (4:00pm-8:30pm)
- Occasionally, special events will be held outside of the class schedule. Advance notice will be given.
Summer Semester (May – July)
- No on-campus class sessions
- Participate in weekly virtual Challenge Project webinars
- July on-campus Challenge Project presentation to Faculty Committee
Candidates who pursue GIEL as part of a Master of Science degree can complete their Master’s Degree program coursework during the same year or after completing the required GIEL coursework. Explore all degree program options on the Degree and Certificate page.
GIEL is designed for students employed in industry, the vast majority of participants work full-time while pursuing the degree.
The Gordon Institute recognizes that engineers working in industry need graduate programs that are compatible with their lifestyle and career goals. To best meet the needs of our students and add flexibility to their academic experience we’ve designed a curriculum structure with the best elements of in-person and hybrid learning. Hybrid options allow candidates to attend weekly classes both in-person or virtually. This model allows maximum flexibility as we prepare to meet the needs of today’s ever-changing world of work.
Most employers view GIEL as an important investment that they make on behalf of their participating Candidates. To help maintain work-school-life balance and ensure the greatest return on investment from the Challenge Project experience, some organizations offer a reduced/adjusted work schedule to account for time spent in classes or working on the Challenge Project.
GIEL encourages all organizations and Candidates to communicate about work expectations and schedules as part of the program onboarding process.
