Honoring Recent Award Recipients: January 2025

Northeastern faculty continue to earn prestigious external recognition for their transformative contributions across disciplines. From pioneering research to educational leadership, these recent honorees exemplify the university’s commitment to solving global challenges and advancing their fields.

Alireza Ramezani, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering (COE), received the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Rising Star in Mechanical Engineering Award. This recognition follows his NSF CAREER Award for groundbreaking research in bio-inspired robotics. His innovative work, which has captured the attention of National Geographic and Popular Science, focuses on developing robots that can navigate complex environments by mimicking bat movements. Published in the International Journal of Robotics Research, his research advances robotic capabilities for maneuvering through challenging spaces like caves, shafts, ducts, and pipes, demonstrating how nature-inspired design can revolutionize technological solutions for real-world applications.

The American Musicological Society has bestowed the prestigious Ruth A. Solie Award upon two distinguished CAMD faculty members, recognizing their exceptional contribution to the field through their co-edited volume “The Science-Music Borderlands: Reckoning with the Past and Imagining the Future.” Associate Professor Deirdre Loughridge, who serves as associate dean of faculty affairs for CAMD, brings her expertise in historical musicology to this groundbreaking work. Her collaboration with Associate Professor Psyche Loui, who directs the MIND (Music, Imaging, and Neural Dynamics) lab, exemplifies the power of interdisciplinary scholarship.

Together with Elizabeth H. Margulis, a Professor and Director of the Music Cognition Lab at Princeton University, they’ve created a transformative collection that bridges scientific and humanistic approaches to music studies, offering vital insights for scholars, performers, composers, and music therapists while charting new territories in understanding musical life.

Matthew Miller, Professor of Public Health and Health Sciences in Bouvé College of Health Sciences, has achieved one of the highest honors in health and medicine with his election to the National Academy of Medicine. This prestigious appointment places him among a select group of just 2,400 members nationally, recognizing his significant epidemiological research contributions to public health and injury prevention. His election acknowledges not only his exceptional scholarship but also his commitment to advancing health equity through research, leadership, and service in addressing critical public health challenges.
