Northeastern University faculty continue to garner distinguished awards recognizing their impact across multiple fields. We are excited to introduce the latest group of award-winning Northeastern University scholars and the honors they have earned.

Dr. Devesh Tiwari, Associate Vice Provost for Research Computing and Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering, has received two honors:

Professor Tiwari has won the Faculty Excellence Award from Hewlitt Packard Enterprise for his work advancing the sustainability and efficiency of large-scale computing systems.

Professor Tiwari has also been recognized by the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis as a Best Paper Finalist for coauthoring GreenMix: Energy-Efficient Serverless Computing via Randomized Sketching on Asymmetric Multi-Cores.

Dr. Tiwari’s research focus includes high performance, quantum, and sustainable computing. He and his research group have produced fourteen award-winning or finalist papers at various conferences, and Tiwari has won multiple accolades for teaching and mentoring over his career.

You can read more about Professor Tiwari’s faculty excellence accolade on the College of Engineering’s website.

Dr. Ruobing Bai, Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in the College of Engineering, has won the Journal of Mechanics and Physics of Solids Best Referee Award. The Journal is a pre-eminent publication in the field of solid mechanics and has been publishing materials since 1952. Professor Bai’s research explores both solid mechanics and materials science. In addition to his faculty duties, Professor Bai serves as secretary of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers technical committee “Mechanics of Soft Materials” and is a member of the Extreme Mechanics Letters Early Career Advisory Board.

Dr. Alessandro Vespignani Director and Sternberg Family Distinguished Professor of Physics in the College of Science, has been awarded the 2025 Statistical and Nonlinear Physics Division Prize from the European Physical Society (EPS). The EPS has recognized Professor Vespignani for his work on statistical physics and universal principles that govern how epidemics spread and information is disseminated. Professor Vespignani’s research explores how technology and society interact and influence each other using complex analytical and computational models. In addition to his faculty responsibilities, Professor Vespignani serves as director of the Network Science Institute at Northeastern.

Dr. Yi Zheng, Associate Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in the College of Engineering, has received two honors:

Professor Zheng has been named one of Ten Outstanding Young Leaders (TOYL) by the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce Foundation in the Energy, Climate, & Construction category. TOYL awards are presented annually to recognize the contributions of young leaders who have demonstrated significant commitments to advance communities in the greater Boston area.

Professor Zheng  has also won the International Education Leadership Award from The Witherspoon Institute for outstanding contributions to education. The Witherspoon Institute is a nonprofit community leadership think tank devoted to advancing art, literature, and education.

Dr. Zheng’s research interests include classical heat transfer, thermodynamics, and nanotechnology. Zheng is the founder of Planck Energies, a clean-energy startup developing commercial and residential renewable energy solutions globally.

For more information on Professor Zheng’s TOYL accolade, you may read more on the College of Engineering’s website.

Dr. Weiyan Shi, Assistant Professor in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences and the College of Engineering, has been named an AI2050 Early Career Fellow in recognition of her foundational research in AI. This honor from Schmidt Sciences comes with a grant of $500,000 to support Professor Shi’s continued research into advancing the safety and effectiveness of Large Language Models (LLMs) and persuasion to challenge AI safety. Professor Shi previously served as a research intern at Meta AI where she developed the negotiation dialogue agent for the AI Cicero which received media coverage from multiple outlets.
You my read more about Professor Shi’s recognition on the College of Engineering’s website.

Dr. Benjamin Woolston, Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering in the College of Engineering, has received the Early Career Award from the Society for Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology. Professor Woolston’s research explores metabolic engineering, synthetic bioenergy, as well as biochemistry and microbiology. Woolston currently serves on the editorial boards of multiple journals related to biology and engineering. He was recently the recipient of the 2025 Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) for his work on methanol fermentation in the pursuit of a sustainable alternative to ethanol in fuel.

Dr. Chris Unger, Teaching Professor in the College of Professional Studies, has been included in the inaugural National AI in Education Fellowship Cohort from the Center on Reinventing Public Education (CPRE) to address the challenges and risks of AI in education. Professor Unger has decades of experience conducting research and evaluation in schools across the nation. His work focuses on the design and development of learner-centered schools, education entrepreneurship, system change, and teaching. Professor Unger currently works to prepare doctoral students to become positive agents of change in education.

Dr. Marco Colangelo, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering, has received the Embassy of Italy Award from the Italian Scientists & Scholars In North America Foundation (ISSNAF) for his contributions to the field of quantum technologies. Professor Colangelo’s research explores applied superconductivity, single-photon detectors, cryogenic devices, and nanofabrication technology. In addition to his duties as faculty, Professor Colangelo serves as the team leader of Northeastern’s Nano Structures Laboratory focusing on the design, nanofabrication, and measurement of hybrid nanodevices and systems.

Dr. Mansoor Amiji, University Distinguished Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Chemical Engineering in the Bouvé College of Health Sciences and College of Engineering, has been honored with a fellowship in the 2025 cohort of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) . The NAI Fellowship is a prestigious honor and the highest professional distinction awarded solely to inventors. Professor Amiji’s research focuses on polymetric biomaterials, nanomedical technologies, and targeted drug delivery systems for a number of treatment-resistant diseases. Professor Amiji has published extensively on drug delivery systems and also serves as director of the Translational Therapeutic Delivery Laboratory.
