Honoring Recent Award Recipients: May 2025

Northeastern faculty are consistently recognized with prestigious external honors for their impactful contributions across a wide range of disciplines. We are proud to introduce the latest group of award-winning faculty members.

Dr. Maria Ivanova, Director of the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs and Professor of Public Policy, has been awarded the Engaged Scholar Award from the Environmental Studies Section from the International Studies Association (ESS of ISA). The Environmental Studies Section supports innovative research, interdisciplinary perspectives, and the application of a variety of methodologies for analyzing international environmental issues and global environmental governance. Dr. Ivanova has published widely on environmental governance and her work explores the effectiveness of international institutions, national performance on environmental conventions, and the role of small states in environmental governance.
Two distinguished faculty members have been elected as American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) 2024 Fellows, an honor, bestowed since 1874, which recognizes members of the AAAS community who have contributed significantly to the advancement of science or its applications.
Dr. Randall Hughes, Professor in the Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences at the College of Science, has been elected in the Biological Sciences section. Professor Hughes’s research examines the ecological and social causes and consequences of biodiversity change and the application of that knowledge for the benefit of marine systems.

Dr. Mansoor Amiji, University Distinguished Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Chemical Engineering at the College of Engineering, has been elected in the Pharmaceutical Sciences section. Professor Amiji’s research interests include polymeric biomaterials, nanomedical technologies, and targeted drug delivery systems for a variety of diseases.

Dr. Jonathan Mwaura (Associate Teaching Professor in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at the Roux Institute) has been awarded the 2025 Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group Computer Science Education (SIGCSE) Award for his groundbreaking exchange program with Université Gaston Berger in Senegal. His “Artificial Intelligence for Agriculture” course has created valuable learning opportunities across continents while producing research that offers practical solutions to agricultural challenges—illustrating how global collaboration in computer science education generates innovations with real-world impact.

Dr. Idia Binitie Thurston (jointly appointed in the Bouvé College of Health Sciences and the College of Social Sciences and Humanities as Professor of Health Sciences and Applied Psychology and the Associate Director of the Institute for Health Equity and Social Justice) has received recognition from Division 54 of the American Psychological Association for her contributions to pediatric psychology. Her pioneering research addresses critical healthcare challenges affecting children, creating evidence-based frameworks that have influenced both clinical practice and policy development nationwide.
Dr. Kabria Baumgartner (Dean’s Associate Professor of History and Africana Studies in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities) has been doubly honored with both the Shapiro Center for American History & Culture Fellowship from the Huntington Library and the 2025 Excellence in Consulting Award from the National Council on Public History. Her scholarship on Black youth and civil rights in Boston and her project “Recovering Black History in Keene, New Hampshire” enrich our collective understanding of American history by illuminating important historical narratives.


Dr. Abraham Joy, Professor and Chair of the Department of Bioengineering in the College of Engineering, has been inducted into the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) College of Fellows Class of 2025. This prestigious distinction recognizes the top two percent of medical and biological engineers for their outstanding contributions to the field and insightful research. Dr. Joy was elected to receive the AIMBE fellowship for his ongoing work in designing, fabricating, and translating synthetic biomimetic materials into advanced therapeutic and diagnostic medical products.
Dr. Psyche Loui, Associate Professor of Creativity and Creative Practice in the College of Science, has been elected President of the Society for Music Perception and Cognition (SMPC). The objective of the SMPC is to advance the scientific and scholarly understanding of music through diverse disciplines including music theory and psychology. Dr. Loui also serves as the director of the MIND (Music, Imaging, and Neural Dynamics) lab at Northeastern University which aims to understand the underlying musical processes of the brain including perception, memory, and emotional response to sensory stimuli.


Dr. Predrag Radivojac, Professor of Computer Science and Associate Dean of Research at the Khoury College of Computer Science, has been inducted into the Class of 2025 Fellows by the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB). This prestigious honor recognizes excellence in computational biology through impactful leadership and research. Dr. Radivojac has contributed extensive work toward applying machine learning to protein function prediction and genome interpretation. Dr. Radivojac previously served as a board member for the ISCB before being promoted to ISCB President 2024
