About the Program
Empower Indonesia’s Future: Master AI, Sustainability, and Entrepreneurship
The Bali to Boston program equips Indonesian tourism and creative economy leaders with advanced skills in AI, sustainability, and entrepreneurship, fostering continuous improvement and adaptation. Participants will learn design thinking, understand AI and sustainable practices, and confidently implement new ideas. The program includes morning classes and interactive exercises, followed by afternoon visits to Boston-area agencies, companies, and university facilities. Lunchtime talks from industry leaders further enrich the learning experience.
Objectives
- Learn the basics of AI, machine learning, and informatics as relating to tourism and developing a “creative economy.”
- Identify how to use these tools to support innovation and entrepreneurship
- Gain “sustainability mindset” skills to help avoid decisions that result in unsustainable outcomes or unintended consequences
- Build confidence through hands-on and experiential learning exercises, particularly in developing new ideas and approaches for building local green industries

Program Faculty

David Bell earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and holds both a Master of Education and a Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Loyola University Chicago. Beyond academia, David has consulted for the Illinois Multi-Tiered System of Support Network, offering expertise in enhancing instructional practices across multiple school districts. He has authored or co-authored over 15 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, contributing significantly to the field of education.

Davis Bookhart’s courses focus on sustainability management and thinking, preparing students to tackle 21st-century challenges. Previously, he established the Sustainability Office at Johns Hopkins University and now coordinates initiatives like the Sustainable Smart Campus as a Living Lab and chairs the Task Force on Sustainability Progress at the HK Sustainable Campus Consortium. Additionally, he contributes to environmental committees and nonprofit efforts, including founding Charm21 to promote renewable fuels in Maryland’s Baltimore region.

With 25 years of experience, Hamit co-founded the Initiative for Analytics and Data Science Standards (IADSS) and the Analytics Center in EMEA. Previously, he was a partner at Peppers & Rogers Group, leading the Global Analytics Group and expanding the firm’s EMEA presence. He holds a degree in electronics engineering from Bogazici University and an MBA from the University of Florida. Hamit is also a frequent speaker, writer, and mentor.

With over 25 years of global experience in health and pharmaceutical data analytics, Uwe Hohgrawe previously served as VP of global business intelligence at EMD Serono and led Johnson & Johnson’s global pharmaceutical market research teams. A former president of the European Pharmaceutical Market Research Association, Dr. Hohgrawe has published extensively on business intelligence.

Laura Huang’s research focuses on intuition and interpersonal signaling in entrepreneurship, workplace interactions, and economic decisions. She is the author of the international best-seller “EDGE: Turning Adversity into Advantage” and has published her work in leading journals. Laura holds degrees from Duke University, INSEAD, and the University of California, Irvine, and has previous experience in investment banking, consulting, and management.

Joseph Reilly oversees program innovation, faculty support, curriculum development, and academic integrity coordination. Previously, at Wayfair, he served as a Senior Product Analyst and Data Scientist, focusing on semantic text extraction and data science product management. His background includes designing technology-based science curricula at Harvard, where he conducted pioneering research in learning analytics.

Joseph Zilligen is currently the Associate Vice Chancellor of Learning Ecosystem & Improvement, where he leads educational strategy and improvement efforts. Previously, he served as a Communications & Policy Strategist and Independent Consultant in Seattle, WA, specializing in education policy and strategic communications. His diverse roles have equipped him with a deep understanding of policy development and educational landscapes, contributing to his impactful career in shaping effective educational initiatives.
U.S. VISAS
In order to attend DRS 2024, international attendees will need to obtain a U.S. Business Visa (B-1) or Visa Waiver for Business (WB) through the Visa Waiver Program.
