Khaled Ghannam: Refining Climate Models to Mitigate Risks
Quantifying and mitigating potential risks arising from global warming and land use change is the focus of Khaled Ghannam’s research. By combining theoretical modeling of global and regional climate, statistical and physical analysis of climate model output, and numerical simulations of land-atmosphere interactions, he helps scientists and policymakers better understand the complexities of land use and its implications for water resources.
Recently appointed to Northeastern University as an Assistant Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Ghannam joins the iSUPER impact engine that’s pairing localized sensing technologies with novel pollution prediction models to identify hyperlocal pollutions hot spots.
Previously a research scientist at Princeton University, Ghannam also served as an environmental consultant for major engineering projects in Lebanon, Qatar, and Dubai, and is a member of the Coupling of Land and Atmospheric Subgrid Paramaterizations team of the US Department of Energy.
Ghannam earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Beirut Arab University, a Master’s in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering from the American University of Beirut, and his Doctorate in Environmental Fluid Mechanics and Hydrology from Duke

Larry Han: Translating Real World Data into Clinical Efficacy
arry Han focuses on developing novel statistical methods to leverage real world data to improve decision-making in public health and clinical medicine. Specifically, his academic interests include robust and efficient estimation and inference of treatment effects using large-scale data generated from electronic health records and clinical trial data.
Recently appointed as Assistant Professor at Northeastern’s Bouvé College of Health Sciences and member of the Real Word Health Care Navigator, Han has authored or co-authored more than 30 papers on a range of topics—from the effects of apps on the sexual health of gay men in China to the benefits of crowdsourcing in health research to the efficacy of malaria vaccines in Malawi.
A native of North Carolina, Han earned a Bachelor’s in Public Health from UNC Chapel Hill, a Master’s in Global Affairs from Tsinghua University, a Master’s in Operations Management from the University of Cambridge, and an A.M. and Ph.D. in Biostatistics from Harvard. Throughout his graduate studies, Han served on departmental and university-wide committees and was honored with awards recognizing his scholarship, conference presentations, and teaching.
