Davis Bookhart
Senior Advisor for Sustainability
Biography
Davis Bookhart joined Northeastern University in March 2024 to help develop strategies and new programs to strengthen the university’s capacity in sustainability-related research and education. Bookhart arrived after serving as the inaugural director of the Sustainability/Net-Zero Office at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, responsible for implementing the university’s sustainability master plan across operations, research, and academics. Over a decade the Office grew to house the Life-Cycle Lab and the Sustainable Smart Campus as a Living Lab initiative—supporting campus projects that demonstrate smart approaches to solve sustainability challenges—as well as an award from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charitable Trust to support sustainability practices across all eight universities within the HK Sustainable Campus Consortium.
Bookhart teaches classes on sustainability management and sustainability thinking, both of which develop skills and mental frameworks for addressing complex 21st century problems in ways that are more likely to result in long-term sustainable outcomes.
Bookhart came to HKUST after eight years as founding director of the Office of Sustainability at Johns Hopkins University. Before joining Johns Hopkins, Bookhart was senior project director of the public interest group Consumer Energy Council of America where he led a research team to analyze the intersection of energy and environmental policies. In 2008 Bookhart was appointed by Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon to the city’s first Sustainability Commission. Bookhart serves as Advisory Council member for the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN), as well as Advisory Board member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). He holds a master’s degree in International Affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a master’s of American Literature from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
