Chief of Artificial Intelligence

Biography

Jay will lead the strategic implementation of AI across the university, aligning cutting-edge innovations with our academic plan, Experience Unleashed. He will promote AI innovation, literacy, and adoption across research, educational programs, and institutional operations.

With extensive AI experience in both academia and industry, Jay is well-positioned to excel in this new role. As a professor in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences, his research has focused on AI and its applications, including machine learning, information retrieval, natural language processing, and healthcare. He is also the Co-founder and Chief Data Science Officer at CodaMetrix, an AI-powered healthcare company dedicating to increasing efficiencies and enhancing care by providing autonomous medical coding with the accuracy and clinical specificity necessary for fee-for-service care, value-based care, population health studies, and beyond. Launched in 2019, CodaMetrix provides AI-powered autonomous medical coding for numerous healthcare organizations including Mayo Clinic, Mass General Brigham, Mount Sinai, and Henry Ford Health.

Jay has witnessed Northeastern’s rapid evolution firsthand since joining the university in 2003. Throughout his tenure, he has been an active researcher, educator, and administrator. His leadership within the Khoury College of Computer Sciences includes many key roles, among them Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Associate Dean of Faculty, Associate Dean of Research, and Associate Dean of Graduate Programs
