Thomas Sheahan
Interim Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
Biography
Tom Sheahan serves as Interim Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, bringing extensive academic leadership experience to the role. Most recently, he served as Executive Vice Provost beginning in 2022. From 2019 to 2022, he was the Senior Vice Provost for Curriculum and Programs. As Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for the College of Engineering from 2011 to 2019, he oversaw undergraduate and graduate education, cooperative education, faculty affairs, budgeting, and a range of operational functions. From 2007 to 2010, he served as Interim Chair for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, where he has been on the faculty since 1991.
Sheahan’s technical expertise is in geotechnical engineering. He received funding from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the U.S. National Science Foundation, and authored more than 90 publications, including a seminal geotechnical engineering textbook. He served as editor of the ASTM journal in his field and co-edited several conference proceedings. Sheahan holds leadership positions in both ABET and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), of which he is a Fellow. He received outstanding teaching awards at Northeastern, and numerous honors from ASTM, ASCE, and Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society.
Sheahan holds a BS in Civil Engineering from Union College and his master’s and doctorate from MIT, and is a registered professional engineer.
