Marné Smith serves as the Associate Vice Provost for Education and Research Safety (AVPERS) at Northeastern University. She is an integral member of the Office of the Provost, and reports to the Senior Vice Provost for Curriculum and Programs (SVPCP), with dotted line reporting to the Senior Vice Provost for Research. As a member of the leadership team of the SVPCP, Marne is responsible for leading a culture of education and research safety across Northeastern University, including global campuses and all locations where the university community is engaged in laboratory and/or field research, education, and co-curricular activities. This enhanced and inclusive emphasis on safety will emphasize the importance of a safety climate in which every member of the University community prioritizes their own safety as well as the safety of those around them as a shared value.
Prior to her arrival at Northeastern in 2020, Marne held executive positions focused on research safety at the State University of New York, Texas A&M, and Tulane University. She received a B.S. from the State University of New York and an M.S. from the University of Maryland. She is also a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), Laser Safety Officer (LSO), and was certified as a Building and Fire Code Inspector in the State of New York.
