Ombuds Office
The Ombuds: Diane Levin, J.D., CO-OP
The Ombuds for Faculty and Staff serves as an off-the-record, neutral, and informal resource for Northeastern University employees seeking assistance with work-related concerns.
Communications with the Ombuds are confidential, and the Ombuds Office is independent of all other University offices.
You may contact the Ombuds as a first step or a last resort—or at any point along the way—to discuss any work-related issue or problem. The Ombuds will listen to your concerns, connect you to resources and information, help you evaluate your situation, and explore and assess avenues for resolution. At your request and as appropriate, the Ombuds may reach out to others on your behalf to seek additional information or clarification to better understand an issue. The Ombuds can provide coaching with written and verbal communications, assist through shuttle diplomacy or informal mediation, or simply be present in a discussion as a neutral.
The Ombuds can help you assess the potential benefits and risks associated with different courses of action so that you can determine how to address the issue most safely and effectively. You control the process and decide what actions if any you might take.
For additional information about the Ombuds Office for Faculty and Staff, please view the Northeastern University Ombuds Offices Terms of Reference (developed in conjunction with the Graduate Ombuds Office).

What Faculty Need to Know About TRACE
Administered by the Office of the Registrar in collaboration with the Office of the Provost, the TRACE (Teacher Rating and Course Evaluation) survey is utilized for undergraduate and graduate students to rate their satisfaction with their courses and instructors. (Link to a sample TRACE survey.) Academic policies for TRACE were instituted by the 2011-2012 Faculty Senate.
How to Access TRACE Survey Results:
For courses taught in Summer 2025 onward, faculty members can access their TRACE survey results by clicking on the following link: myTRACE 2025-Forward, which navigates to a dashboard in the Explorance platform with TRACE results for each course taught.
For courses taught before Summer 2025, faculty members can access previous TRACE survey results by clicking on the following link: MyTRACE 2015-2025, which navigates to a dashboard in the CollegeNET platform with TRACE results for courses taught.
How to Request Comment Redaction:
Faculty can review their own TRACE reports, including student comments, before they are published and made available to the university community. Faculty have access to their results the evening after grades are due. Redaction requests must be submitted within 10 business days after grades are due and will be sent to the Provost’s Office for review. Faculty may request redaction of any comments that meet either of the following:
Criteria for Redaction:
- Appear to evaluate the instructor on criteria not related to her/his teaching performance and/or on a discriminatory basis. The university’s Equal Opportunity Policy affirms that “Northeastern University does not condone discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, religious creed, genetics, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, ancestry, veteran or disability status.”
- Raise allegations of professional impropriety (including harassment or discrimination) on the part of the instructor. Such allegations may be redacted and referred to appropriate university authorities for investigation.
To request redaction of any comment, take the following steps:
- Within each of your TRACE reports, you will find a link entitled “Click here to request redactions.” When you click on this link, you will be directed to a separate login. Select the yellow “SAML” button and use your NU credentials. The landing page is the “Comment Explorer” that shows all comments from all courses you have taught in the semester or term.
- The “Add filters” button allows you to filter by course and review all comments for a specific course.
- For a comment that you wish to redact, click on the redaction icon (the second icon from the left, a “locked paper” icon), and a pop-up window will appear.
- In this window, briefly describe why you think a comment meets either of the two criteria for redaction.
- After you enter your description, click the “submit” button in the bottom-right corner to submit your request.
More detailed information is available from the Registrar here.
For general questions on TRACE implementation and policies, please contact Debra Franko, Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, at d.franko@northeastern.edu.
